FOTD: Everyday subtle smokey eye with NYX No Tan Lines Allowed

I recently purchased my first NYX eyeshadow palette in their newest trio, Love in Rio.  I was drawn to No Tan Lines Allowed which included a beautiful taupe.  With spring in the air I've been loving peaches and corals and love to offset these warmer colors with cool tones such as blues and greys.

I've never used NYX shadows before but I soon found how creamy they were after swatching in the store.  The pigmentation is great and I tried using these shadows with and without a primer.

The No Tan Lines Allowed  palette includes a matte vanilla, a satiny-sheen taupe, and a matte espresso brown.
Indoor lighting: (L) no primer, (R) over primer
After experimenting and testing these shadows with and without a primer, I find that I prefer to use these on my bare lid.  Without a primer, the taupe leans neutral-warm and has a satin finish, whereas over a primer the shadow looks more silvery and sheen.  I'm willing to sacrifice wear time to achieve the color that drew me to this palette.

Outdoors in direct sunlight: (L) no primer, (R) over primer
Without a primer, these shadows last about 4-5 hours on me and with a primer, I get a few more hours.  I experimented with NARS eyeshadow primer and unfortunately, I had creasing at the 6th hour.  The vanilla and taupe colors applied smoothly, but I did experience a tiny bit of fallout from the espresso.

Though these aren't the longest-lasting shadows that I've ever used, for their price point, they're pretty good and they make experimenting with bolder, trendier colors more affordable.

For this everyday face-of-the-day, I applied the taupe color in the palette all over my lid to slightly above the crease.  I applied the vanilla color to my inner tear duct and afterwards used the dark brown shadow to line my upper lash line creating a thicker line at the outer corners.  To add a bit of subtle smokiness, I applied any remaining dark brown shadow on the applicator to the lower outer 1/3 of my lower lash lines.

  3. Those really are some pretty shades! Hautelook has some good deals on NYX and I was debating on whether I should splurge and get a few items. I just might now. Too bad they don't have this palette. I'll have to try finding it elsewhere.

  7. Oh wow, I knew it'd look good on you but you really exceeded my expectations! I never really realized how some eyeshadows could look different with and without a primer, so it's great that you pointed this out. I'll have to pay more attention to that from now on, though I don't really have the choice not to use a primer if I want anything to last!

    1. I'm so lazy with applying primer that I like to use products that don't require one to last long, like cream shadows.
